12 Live Chat Scripts for Customer Service

Chat scripts differ from email templates in register: shorter sentences, faster turns, restrained emoji. The 12 scripts below are organized by conversation stage, with full dialogue examples for the conversion moments. Copy one and replace the {placeholders} before using.

Three rules of chat register

  • Short sentences, sent in pieces. An email paragraph becomes two or three chat messages; long blocks in a small window go unread.
  • Answer first, explanation second. Chat readers reliably read the first two lines; put the answer in sentence one and the reasoning after.
  • Name the wait. "One moment" breeds anxiety; "give me 2 minutes" is a commitment. Say how long the check takes and update before the time is up.

One principle for conversion moments

Selling in chat isn't pitching — it's lowering the cost of the next step. Pricing question: send the free-tier link, not a quote. Hesitation: give one decision rule, not a spec sheet. Discount ask: offer the existing deal, not a refusal. Every script here ends on an action the visitor can complete in one tap.

Openings

First greeting

Hi there! 👋 Welcome to {store}. I'm {agent} — if any question comes up while you browse, just type it here. I'm a real person and I reply fast.

Proactive nudge (lingering on a product page)

Hi! I noticed you're looking at the {product} — happy to answer anything about sizing, shipping times, or how it compares to {alternative}. No pressure, I'm here if you need me.

After-hours

Hi! Our team is offline right now (back {time}, {timezone}). Leave your question and email here — you'll have an answer in your inbox when we're back. If it's about an existing order, include the order number and we'll check it first thing.

Mid-conversation

Need a moment to check

Good question — give me {1–2} minutes to check that for you. I'll stay right here in the chat, you don't need to do anything.

Transfer to a specialist

For this one I'll bring in {specialist}, who handles {area} — they'll see our whole conversation, so you won't need to repeat anything. One moment while I connect you.

Ask for a screenshot or details

Could you send me a screenshot of what you're seeing? You can paste it right into this chat. Along with your order number, that's everything I need to solve this in one go.

Conversion moments

Pricing question → trial

Visitor: How much does it cost?
Agent: Plans start at {price}/month, and there's a free tier you can keep as long as you like. Honestly, the fastest way to know if it fits: start the free plan ({no card needed}), try it on your real {use case}, and I'll be right here if anything's confusing. Want the signup link?

Cart hesitation

Visitor: I'm not sure between {A} and {B}...
Agent: Totally fair — the short version: {A} is better if {condition_a}, {B} if {condition_b}. For {their_situation} I'd pick {recommendation}. And if it turns out wrong, our {X}-day return policy has you covered either way.

Discount ask (redirect)

Visitor: Can you give me a discount?
Agent: I can't change prices — we keep them the same for everyone. What I can do: {existing offer, e.g. free shipping over {amount}, or the {code} welcome code for first orders}. That's the best deal available today, and it works right now.

Closings

Resolved close

Glad that's sorted! 🎉 Anything else I can help with while you're here? If not — have a great day, and just reopen this chat anytime you need us.

Idle warning

Still with me? No rush — I'll keep this chat open for another {5} minutes. If you're busy, I can also send the answer to your email so nothing gets lost. Just drop it here.

Close + satisfaction ask

Happy I could help! Before you go — there's a quick 👍/👎 at the end of this chat; it takes one tap and genuinely helps us improve. Thanks either way, and enjoy your {product}!

Frequently asked questions

Are emoji okay in live chat?

Yes, sparingly: one in the opening and one in the closing is safe territory; zero in complaints and disputes. Mirror the customer's register — if they stay formal throughout, put the emoji away.

What response time should live chat hit?

The common expectation runs in seconds to a couple of minutes — "live" sets the bar at near-instant. If you can't staff that, an offline form that collects an email beats an online button nobody answers for ten minutes.

Do proactive chat invitations annoy visitors?

It depends on the trigger. Popping up at the door sitewide is noise; greeting someone who's spent 30+ seconds on a product page, stalled at checkout, or returned to pricing a second time — those high-intent moments consistently start more conversations than waiting passively.

Can I feed these scripts to an AI agent?

Yes — that's the best use. Make the scripts the AI's tone and structure baseline (answer first, name the wait, end on a next step), let it handle openings and routine questions, and bring humans in for conversion moments and complex cases.

Scripts fix one message at a time; the AI Agent automates openings, order checks and routine questions so humans only join the conversations that matter most.
