How to Use WhatsApp Web: Login, Disconnects, and Where It Stops Working for Teams

WhatsApp Web (web.whatsapp.com) works with one scan: point your phone at the QR code and your chats appear in the browser. This guide covers login steps, how it relates to multi-device, why it keeps disconnecting, and the point where support teams should switch to the official API.

Using WhatsApp Web takes one sentence to explain: open web.whatsapp.com in a desktop browser, scan the QR code with WhatsApp on your phone, and your conversations sync to the computer. What’s actually worth explaining is three other things — how it relates to linked devices, why it keeps dropping offline, and where its limits sit when you try to run support on it.

Login steps and the multi-device relationship

  1. Visit web.whatsapp.com in a desktop browser; a QR code appears;
  2. On your phone: WhatsApp → Settings → Linked Devices → Link a device;
  3. Scan the code and wait for sync to finish.

Since WhatsApp shipped multi-device, the web client is simply one of your linked devices: up to 4 companion devices can be linked at once, and they keep working even when your phone is offline (the old keep-your-phone-online era is over). Two caveats:

  • If the phone stays offline for more than 14 days, all linked devices are signed out automatically;
  • Companion devices can’t do everything (some conversation-management actions behave differently by version) — the phone remains the primary.

Why it keeps disconnecting

Web-client dropouts almost always trace back to one of these, ordered by frequency:

  • The phone’s battery optimizer killed WhatsApp in the background (common on Android) — whitelist it
  • The phone passed 14 days without connecting — just re-scan
  • The browser cleared cookies / you’re in a private window — use a normal window and keep site data
  • Office network blocks WhatsApp domains or long-lived connections — test on another network
  • You hit the linked-device limit — remove idle devices under Linked Devices on the phone
